Manchester United ‘appreciate’ Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez ahead of the January transfer window, but are unlikely to spend the type of money required to sign him on a player this winter.
This has been suggested by reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, who has been speaking on his YouTube channel about the Argentinian star.
It has been claimed that a number of clubs are now targeting the 21-year-old after securing glory at the World Cup, which has provided Benfica with an opportunity to cash in on the midfielder’s success.
However, it is believed it would take in excess of £100m to prise him away from the Portuguese giants, with Benfica reluctant to sell.
United have been named as a club with an interest in the midfield gem, but Romano does not believe those sorts of funds will be made available in January at Old Trafford.
He said: “With Man United, it’s interest, but Man United are not going to invest crazy money in January – this is the point.
“The Glazers are selling Man United, and so they don’t want to spend crazy money on one single player in January, and so this is why for Enzo, Man United appreciate him, but it’s still nothing in the process for January and they’re not paying the release clause. This is important.”
TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…
United fans may be frustrated by these comments from Romano, however, there are very few clubs who will have the ability to spend such a big sum of money on one player in the January window.
Would you want United to spend £106m on Fernandez?
Yes
No
And we do question whether spending that sum of money on Fernandez would be the best option for United anyway.
There is no doubting his potential given he was awarded the World Cup’s Young Player of the Tournament award, but after Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit, a new striker is surely top of their list.
With United’s ongoing situation with the Glazers, it is hard to imagine any major moves may be made, but this won’t lessen the blow of potentially seeing other Premier League sides improve in January.
