Journalist Dean Jones has revealed that Wolverhampton Wanderers are prepared for losing Portuguese duo Matheus Nunes and Ruben Neves in the summer transfer window.
What’s the latest on Nunes and Neves at Wolves?
Wolves captain Neves has long since been tipped for a move to a bigger club and, with just one more season run on his contract, now would be the time to cash in before he is able to leave on a at the end of next season.
Nunes only arrived at Molineux from Sporting Lisbon last summer but has already been linked by Football Insider to an immediate move to either Manchester United or Liverpool.
Whilst manager Julen Lopetegui has improved results since his arrival in November, the Old Gold’s position near the bottom of the Premier League means they may have to prepare for life without some of their key players.
What has Jones said about Wolves’ transfer status?
Jones has suggested that Wolves will be prepared for the loss of Nunes and Neves, like they were when the likes of Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota left the club.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT regarding the potential departure of the midfield pair, the journalist said:
“Players like Doherty and Jota left the club but there was always a build-up to these moments happening and almost an expectation, so they will be prepared for how to deal with moments like this.”
What does the future hold for Wolves without Nunes and Neves?
Neves has become a fan-favourite at Wolves ever since making a £16m move from Portuguese club Porto back in 2017, and has been hailed as “fantastic” by Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand.
Losing their captain would mean the end of an era for the West Midlands outfit but, as Jones suggests, the club will have known this is likely to happen for sometime and will have a succession plan in place.
Nunes on the other hand has only had one season at Molineux and, although he started slowly, has shown his quality recently with a stunning volleyed goal in a recent 1-0 win over Chelsea that was described as “wonderful” by Glenn Hoddle on BT Sport score (via The Boot Room).
A contingency plan for Nunes will be more difficult considering he is only now beginning to show Wolves fans what he is capable of.
If the club can secure deals for the money they believe both players are worth they will have significant capital to reinvest in their squad for Lopetegui’s first full season in charge.
Time will tell if Jones is right, and plans are in place to spend this money wisely.
