Journalist, Pete O’Rourke spoke exclusively to This Futbol, stating that Jannik Vestergaard ‘could be on the radar’ for Aston Villa in January.
The Danish defender is currently with Premier League side, Leicester City. In the summer of last year, Vestergaard joined the Foxes from Southampton for a fee of £15 million.
At 30-years-old, the defender is someone who has experience playing in the English, German and Danish leagues. Furthermore, Vestergaard has 35 caps for Denmark, making his first appearance in 2013.
O’Rourke has claimed that Villa are in the market for a new centre-back and believes that the Foxes’ man would fit the bill for Unai Emery’s side.
He stated, “Vestergaard has really struggled for first-team football at Leicester he might be interested in a move away for regular first-team football and Villa are in the market for a centre-half I’m sure he is somebody who could be on the radar.”
TIF’s view on O’Rourke’s comments…
We believe that if Villa are looking for a new defender with Premier League experience, Vestergaard would fit that mould.
However, the Danish defender has yet to play a Premier League match this season. In the 2021/22 campaign, Vestergaard only played 10 league matches for Leicester.
Having said that, a potential move would be a great opportunity to prove that he deserves to be a regular Premier League starter. After all, Leicester clearly saw something in him when they bought him back in 2021.
When he was at Southampton, he was a mainstay in the defence during the 2020/21 season. Vestergaard kept six league clean sheets and scored three goals for the Saints.
The 30-year-old is no spring chicken, perhaps Villa may opt to look at a centre-back that is a fair bit younger so that they can be part of the long-term future of the club.
