Aston Villa are interested in joining the race for the signature of Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha.
This is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who has been speaking on his latest Here We Go podcast about the future of the Brazilian forward.
Romano has claimed that Villa’s rivals, Wolverhampton Wanderers, have made a strong move to bring in the 23-year-old when the window opens up next month.
This upcoming January will be the first opportunity for Unai Emery to make some additions to his Villa squad having made the move back to England in late October.
With negotiations ongoing between Atletico and Wolves, Romano has insisted there are still other Premier League clubs interested in Cunha, with Villa being one of them.
He said: “It’s true that also, other English clubs are keeping an eye on Cunha, Aston Villa and other clubs want Matheus Cunha. This is why Wolves want to be fast, but negotiations are ongoing.”
TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…
We certainly think bringing in Cunha would be a major gamble for Villa if they are looking to add a consistent goalscorer to Emery’s options.
Cunha’s best spell came during his time in the German Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin, where it looked as if he was really starting to make a name for himself with 23 goal involvements in 40 games.
However, the move to Madrid perhaps came too soon for the Brazilian, as the progress he was making at the Olympiastadion has come crashing to a halt at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Cunha is still just 23 years old, but after his rather indifferent spell in La Liga, we do find it difficult to imagine him suddenly finding form in what is dubbed the toughest league in the world.
Perhaps a return to Germany would be his best option, but if Wolves are to beat Villa to his signature, it could well be a blessing in disguise.
