Celtic have not signed Alistair Johnston as Josip Juranovic’s replacement, as the Bhoys want to keep the Croatian.
This has been suggested by transfer guru Dean Jones, who has been speaking about the right-back’s future on the latest episode of Chasing Green Arrows.
There are reports suggesting the 27-year-old could be set for a Parkhead exit, with interest in the Croatian emerging following his impressive World Cup campaign.
Premier League giants Chelsea are believed to be one of the clubs showing a serious interest in the Celtic star, and the recent setback suffered by Reece James could accelerate that interest.
However, Jones has heard some people claim the recent signing of Johnston is purely to improve Ange Postecoglou’s squad depth as they wish to keep Juranovic at Parkhead.
He said: “There’s various reports around it. Basically, Celtic are signing another player [Alistair Johnston] that plays his position, but it depends who you speak to.
“Some people believe that that isn’t as a replacement to Juranovic and they want to keep hold of him, too. Yet, there are other people that will tell you he’s available for anywhere between £6-10m – £6m would seem an absolute bargain.”
TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…
Juranovic certainly impressed during his time in Qatar, which saw him feature in all bar one of Croatia’s games and earn him “special” praise.
Do you expect Juranovic to leave in January?
Yes
No
However, with Anthony Ralston having also played a big role at right-back this season for Celtic, it does now leave Postecoglou with a surplus in that position.
And regardless of what Celtic want, if a club like Chelsea or Manchester United are interested, we would imagine the Croatian could push for a move, making it difficult for the Bhoys to keep hold of him.
