Southampton and Sport Republic have made some effort in regards to navigating their way through the transfer market to help strengthen their squad this month.
So far in this latest January transfer window, the Saints have brought in the likes of Mislav Orsic and Carlos Alcaraz to help add some strength and depth to their midfield and attack.
With some time left before the window closes, if the south coast club want to add a new face to their backline, one figure that has been linked with a move to St. Mary’s who would surely be a dream signing for Nathan Jones is Luton Town full-back James Bree.
This season has seen the 25-year-old show how much of an impressive player he is, particularly from an attacking point of view as he has the highest average of key passes per game (2.3) at Luton in the Championship.
With 12 clubs in the Premier League making more key passes this season than Southampton (162), this shows how a player like the Luton star could improve Jones’ side and help them get away from the relegation zone.
Last year, Jones described the right-back as a “phenomenal technician”, which highlights how much the Saints boss admires the player and why he would presumably be happy to have him in his Southampton squad.
Do Southampton need to strengthen their defence?
Yes
No
Bearing in mind how Valentino Livramento has recently suffered an injury setback and how Kyle Walker-Peters has previously been linked with a move away from the club, it’s easy to see why someone like Bree has ended up on Southampton’s radar.
Having played more games under Jones (101) than any other manager he’s featured for, the possibility of linking back up with his former boss and taking the step up to the Premier League would surely be something the defender considers.
Taking all of this into account, we feel that Southampton should definitely explore the possibility of securing a deal for Bree before the January transfer window closes.
