Journalist Josh Bunting has urged Sunderland to refrain from loaning out Trai Hume after his display in the club’s most recent game.
On Boxing Day, the Black Cats managed to pick up a dramatic win, coming from behind to steal three points in stoppage time thanks to a late strike from Ellis Simms.
Blackburn Rovers took the lead thanks to an own goal from Ross Stewart before the Sunderland man pulled his side level from the penalty spot shortly afterwards. Simms then netted the winner in the 91st minute as the game finished 2-1.
After the game, Bunting praised the role Hume played in the victory and suggested that it would be unwise to loan him out in January amid recent talk of a possible departure.
He wrote on Twitter: “Honestly wouldn’t loan Trai Hume next month, I’d be playing [him]. Adapted well to his positions during the game, and for the winner, he was crucial in keeping the ball alive, flicking the ball into [Daniel] Ballard allowing him to slide it onto Simms to finish.”

Manager Tony Mowbray has suggested that certain fringe players would be allowed to leave on loan this winter in order to get more regular playing time. Indeed, he said (via ChronicleLive): “If it’s right for the football club and there’s an enquiry about a player, and the player is happy to do it, or if a player pushes for a loan, then I think we will listen. But we won’t jeopardise the team.”
Seeing as 20-year-old right-back Hume has played just five times in the Championship so far this term for a total of only 235 minutes, it’s fair to say he could fall into that category of players alluded to by his boss.
However, having made a positive impact against Blackburn in a 39-minute cameo off the bench, so perhaps he is set for a run in the team with some more regular appearances.
If so, the Black Cats may well opt to keep him around as they push for a spot in the top six.
