Aston Villa star man and captain Tyrone Mings took to Twitter to drop a huge hint over his status at the club amid rumours of his departure, stating work has already started on getting prepared for next season.
The Villans enjoyed a successful season under their new manager Steven Gerrard and will look to continue to rebuild under the former Rangers boss in the summer as there have been a number of rumours regarding players coming in and heading for the exit doors.
One of these players linked to leaving the club is captain and centre back mainstay Tyrone Mings. The defender has made 128 appearances for the club since he arrived from Bournemouth back in July 2019, but with the introduction of the new manager and a dip in form, it looked as if he could be destined for an exit this summer.
However, in a recent post on Twitter, it would seem as if the England international has no intentions of leaving Villa Park and has already begun his preparations for next season and that fans will see him soon.
He wrote, “After a tough ending to a tough season I just wanna thank everyone associated with @AVFCOfficial for your support. Work has started on making sure we’re better prepared & better equipped for next season already, but for now… I can’t wait for a rest. see you all soon”.
TIF thoughts on Mings’ season…
While Mings has been a good servant for the club since his arrival, stats this season show that he is not an elite defender and therefore it might be time for Villa to move on and bring in a superior player if they want to move further up the table.
According to Fbref, Mings only ranks in the 9th percentile for pressures and the 15th for tackles and does not rank elite in any of the defensive statistics, sitting 59th in interceptions, 71 in blocks, 79 in clearances, and 54th in aerial duels. He also lacks with the ball at his feet, ranking in the 31st percentile for passes attempted and progressive passes and the 17th for pass completion.
The modern game has become more dependent on defenders, especially centre backs playing with the ball and creating from the back, so, therefore, having a player like Mings who has proven he is not elite at this aspect of the game can be damaging to the team. With this in mind, they should look to move on and replace the Englishman.
