Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Manchester United target Cody Gakpo could be set to leave PSV Eindhoven within the next transfer window after some impressive displays at the World Cup.
The 23-year-old forward has been outstanding for club and country this season, with three goals in Qatar adding to his 13 goals and 17 assists for PSV this season, and after much speculation over the summer, it seems that he will finally get his big move.
Man United have been linked with Gakpo as a replacement for the recently released Cristiano Ronaldo, but they will need to pay in excess of €50m (£43m) if they want to sign the Dutchman in January or the summer.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano claimed that there was a strong chance the forward would move clubs this window and that there is plenty of interest in Gakpo.
“Cody Gakpo is now showing on the best stage that he is ready for a top move,” Romano stated.
“Manchester United wanted him in the summer, they are still in talks with people close to the player, but it’s not only Man United.
“There are also other clubs in the race for Cody Gakpo. PSV’s original plan was to let him go in the summer and not in January, but now after this World Cup, if a bid of more than €50m will arrive, there is a chance for Gakpo to leave in January, and I’m told there is a very serious chance.”
TIF Thoughts on Gakpo…
The forward has been in sensational form in the Eredivise, but his exploits at the World Cup have shown that he is ready for the next step, and would be a fine addition to any top side.
Erik ten Hag knows the player well, but there may be stiff competition for the versatile attacker.
Given that Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus is set for an extended spell on the sidelines, the Gunners may push for a January move for Gakpo having been linked with him in the past.
Whoever lands him in January will be recruiting a player for the long term who can also provide an immediate boost given his current form, and there will be no shortage of interest.
