Journalist Pete O’Rourke has told GiveMeSport that Celtic’s recent links with a new striker are a ‘concern’ for Giorgos Giakoumakis.
According to Greek outlet Sportime, the forward has recently changed agents, with the idea of pushing for a move to the English Premier League in January.
In addition, the Daily Record (via the Scottish Daily Express) has claimed that Giakoumakis has not been pleased with the terms given to him over a new contract, causing him to think about his future with the Hoops.
One striker recently linked with the club is Cho Gue-sung, according to The Scottish Sun. The 24-year-old currently plays his football with Jeonbuk Hyundai in South Korea.
Furthermore, a representative of the South Korean national team stated there’s European interest in the player.
O’Rourke stated: “Obviously, it’s a concern probably for Giakoumakis that Celtic are being linked with other forwards right now.
“Giakoumakis has struggled to hold on a regular starting place in Ange Postecoglou’s side, with Kyogo, when fit and in form, probably starting up front for them.”
TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…
We believe that with interest in strikers such as Cho, Celtic may well be preparing for life without Giakoumakis in January.
The forward is currently in his second season with the Hoops and has a strong goal return in the Scottish Premiership, netting 19 goals in 34 league matches for Celtic and has two assists.
Should the Greek striker leave Celtic Park, Cho could be a fitting replacement. In 2022, for Jeonbuk Hyundai and Gimcheon Sangmu, he provided 19 goal contributions in 26 K League matches.
Manager Ange Postecoglou has brought in a number of Asian players into his side since taking charge. One example of Postecoglou’s successes in the Asian market is Kyogo Furuhashi. The 27-year-old has 22 goals in 33 matches across two seasons in the Scottish Premiership.
So if Giakoumakis is to leave Celtic, we think many fans may trust Postecoglou to find a fitting replacement up top.
