Wolverhampton Wanderers boss, Julen Lopetegui has stated the club ‘need to improve’ their squad.

Speaking to Wolves.co.uk, he also aims to ‘increase the confidence’ of the current squad members.

Lopetegui was appointed as the new manager back in early November, following the sacking of former boss, Bruno Lage.

It’s been a poor season so far for Wolves who currently sit at the foot of the Premier League table. The side from the Black Country hasn’t won a game in their last five league matches. However, they’re only four points off safety, so escaping from the bottom three is not impossible.

Lopetegui stated:

“We have to be very clear that the main actors are here, they are here, but after, I don’t know what’s going to happen. Of course, we want to improve our squad, we need to improve our squad, we have to be competitive.

“At the same time, we have to increase the confidence and the players have to believe in themselves, to show they are better players than they have shown at the moment, and they have to do their all to change the situation. We can help them, but the key moment is the players’ determination and commitment to change the situation.”

TIF’s view on Lopetegui’s comments…

We believe that it’s clear that Lopetegui understands the importance of finding a balance in his Wolves squad. He knows the team needs to be improved upon, but at the same time, he wants to develop the players he has at his disposal.

Getting goals has been a real issue for Wolves, they’re the lowest scorers in the Premier League. In 15 league matches, they’ve found the back of the net just eight times.

It’s clear that Lopetegui needs to bring in a goalscorer. One striker they’ve been linked with is Matheus Cunha of Atletico Madrid, per Marca. However, 90Min are now reporting that a number of Premier League clubs have been offered Cunha’s services.

When you look at Cunha’s stats, it leaves a lot to be desired. In his time in the Spanish capital, the Brazilian has struggled to get score or assist. In all competitions, the 23-year-old has 15 goal contributions.

Lopetegui has an impressive list of clubs managed on CV, including Real Madrid, Porto and Sevilla. So, many of the Wolves faithful will trust the boss to sign the right players necessary to ensure Premier League survival.
