Nicolas Jackson is ‘one of the options’ that Southampton could sign in January, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Nathan Jones’ team have started to show signs of improvement in recent games, defeating Manchester City 2-0 in the Carabao Cup before securing a vital 2-1 Premier League win at Everton on Saturday, but they are still searching for new reinforcements.

The Saints are monitoring Celtic forward Daizen Maeda, while they have also had a bid turned down for Terem Moffi, and Jackson has now been identified as a potential signing this month.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Sheth said: “Nicolas Jackson is one of the options that they’re looking at. I think they want to back Nathan Jones – new manager, first transfer window – and it’s almost necessity now as well, because Southampton are in trouble.

They are in big trouble at the bottom of the Premier League and they probably think that reinforcements are going to be needed if they’re going to get out of this mess.

TIF thoughts on Southampton signing Jackson…

Hailed as an ‘exciting‘ player by journalist Josh Bunting, the 21-year-old is enjoying a real breakthrough season with Villarreal, registering two goals and two assists in 14 La Liga outings, but he is perhaps not the right signing for Southampton at this moment in time.

It has previously been detailed by Sheth that a deal for the Senegal international would cost in excess of £20m, which is likely to be a large chunk of the money that Jones has available to spend, so the Saints should instead target proven Premier League players.

Danny Ings has been linked with a return to St Mary’s in recent days, and this is the type of signing that Southampton need, given his fantastic scoring record in England, netting 46 goals in 100 games during his previous stint with the club.
