Reported Tottenham Hotspur target Jordan Pickford would be a ‘perfect signing’ for the north London club.
This has been suggested by TalkSport pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor, who has been discussing the England No 1 as a potential successor in N17 to Hugo Lloris.
There have been recent reports claiming that the Lilywhites are one of a number of Premier League outfits looking at the Everton goalkeeper as a possible upgrade.
Indeed, journalist Craig Hope has stated the England international had agreed on a new deal with the Toffees, but the Merseyside club are still yet to sign it off – putting his future in doubt.
With Lloris now turning 36 and running into the final 18 months of his deal in north London, Agbonlahor believes Pickford could be the perfect heir to the Frenchman’s spot in the Spurs side.
He said: “It’s only really Spurs who you’d say, [with] Lloris getting on now into his thirties – do Spurs want to give him a new big contract, long-term?
“Is that a club where you could see Jordan Pickford at? I think it is. He can play out from the back like the best ‘keepers in the world. And England’s No 1 as well, and he’s a great shot-stopper. He’s got that energy as well within his game. I think he’d be a perfect signing for Spurs.”
TIF Thoughts on Agbonlahor’s comments…
Pickford has held down the starting spot in Gareth Southgate’s England side for a number of years now and he continued to impress at the World Cup.
Would Pickford be a good Lloris successor?
Yes
No
However, he does lack experience at the top end of club football having only played in the Premier League for Sunderland and Everton.
But with younger options like Robert Sanchez and Diogo Costa believed to also be on Tottenham’s radar, it will be interesting to see which avenue the Lilywhites go down.
Pickford has certainly shown what he is capable of in an England shirt, but someone like Costa could offer Spurs the experience of playing in the Champions League at just the age of 23, so a big decision will have to be made in the near future.
