Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Newcastle United target Joao Felix’s agent is still pushing for a transfer to England despite Diego Simeone’s recent comments.

Since the World Cup finished Newcastle have been linked with wantaway attacker Felix who starred for Portugal out in Qatar but has never been able to replicate that sort of form out in La Liga with Atletico Madrid.

Indeed, his agent Jorge Mendes has seemingly been over to England to hold talks with several clubs including Newcastle to try and thrash out a deal ahead of the transfer window, although Simeone’s recent comments about Felix being an important player may well have thrown his future up in the air.

However, Romano has insisted on The House of Champions YouTube channel that Felix and Mendes are still pushing for a move away next month.

He said: (11:00) “I think there is a good chance for Joao Felix to leave Atletico Madrid, today [Wednesday] Diego Simeone was speaking in a press conference about how he’s an important player and this kind of stuff in public.

“But the reality is the agent of the player, Jorge Mendes, has been in England multiple times to have conversations with English clubs about Joao Felix and this is why we have many links.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

It would be an audacious move from Newcastle to try and land someone of Felix’s ability in January given he’s got interest from the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United, but given the Magpies are one of the most in-form sides in the league, he could be tempted.

However, his price tag will be a major stumbling block as Atletico Madrid are reportedly wanting to receive around £100 million for someone that has just 34 goals in 130 appearances across all competitions since moving to Spain.

Given that Newcastle are seemingly focused on signing a new central midfielder after Jonjo Shelvey picked up a major injury over the last week, splashing out on Felix simply wouldn’t make much sense.
