Former Premier League striker Nigel Jemson believes Liverpool could look to bring Kylian Mbappe into the club next summer.
The PSG striker was at the centre of a transfer saga throughout the summer, with Spanish giants Real Madrid attempting to snaffle him away from the French giants.
They even tabled a bid worth just over £171m, although they saw it rejected by PSG in the final days of the transfer window.
Do you think Mbappe will move to Liverpool one day?
Yes
No
That was all the more surprising considering that Mbappe is actually out of contract next summer, meaning he will be able to move on a free transfer; he can also sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club in January, provided they play in a different league to PSG.
Mbappe has emerged as one of the most exciting players in world football in recent years, winning the World Cup with France and scoring 136 goals in 181 games for PSG, while also providing 66 assists.
Jemson believes that Liverpool kept their powder largely dry in the summer in order to facilitate a big spend next summer, and thinks that Mbappe, who is valued at £144m by Transfermarkt, could be an option, although he accepts that Real may be ahead of them in the race.
Asked about whether the lack of activity hinted that there could be a major investment next summer, Jemson said: “It looks like it and as a Liverpool supporter, I hope so. You do look at those, Mbappe has been linked with Liverpool before. He’s obviously been linked massively with Real Madrid.
“Whether Real Madrid is his destination, I don’t know, but I don’t know how Real Madrid, with the finances they’ve got, can come out with a bid of £170 million for somebody, it doesn’t make sense. I don’t know how that can work.”
