Leeds Live reporter Joe Donnohue believes that there has always been a reluctance under Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta to bring players in during the January window.
The club didn’t make a signing in the previous January transfer window [Sky Sports] and still went on to have a terrific campaign, finishing ninth in their first season back in the Premier League and accumulating 59 points.
Do you think Leeds need to strengthen in January?
Yes
No
Donnohue believes that there has always been a reluctance to bring anybody in during the winter transfer window under Bielsa and Orta, telling This is Futbol:
“I mean there’s always been a reluctance under Bielsa and Orta’s stewardship when it comes to transfers and new players, that January does not pose an optimal opportunity to bring players in.
“The vast majority of players who move in January either do on loan or they move permanently because they’ve not been playing football for an extended period at their previous club, which doesn’t lend itself well to Bielsa’s system where you need to be at 100% peak fitness to be able to get in that starting eleven.”
Leeds did strengthen their squad this summer as they brought in five players with Dan James, Jack Harrison, Junior Firpo, Lewis Bate and Kristoffer Klaesson all putting pen-to-paper on permanent deals at Elland Road.
The club didn’t have the best start to this campaign as they went six games without victory but broke that bad streak against Watford, as they ran out 1-0 winners and now find themselves on a three match unbeaten run in the league.
Having turned a corner, Leeds will be hoping that they can continue on their fine run of form and try and replicate last season and push on up the table.
With the transfer window opening in less than two months, will the club break their mould and look to strengthen their squad?
