Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has been sharing his thoughts on the current squad at the Tyneside club and what the biggest issue is within it with the summer transfer window on the horizon.
This comes after Kennedy made an appearance on the latest episode of #NUFC Matters with Steve Wraith where he spoke about a variety of topics concerning Steve Bruce’s side.
During the episode, the subject of the summer transfer window arose and gave Kennedy the opportunity to talk about which areas of the squad he believes the club need to strengthen in during the summer. (44.25)
He said: “Midfield is the problem. Midfield is a major problem, it’s just not right, no matter who plays in those positions, it’s just not right.
“There needs to be some more energy. There needs to be a bit more of a destroyer in there, somebody who would get about the place.”
So far this season, Newcastle have won 10 out of the 35 leagues games they played prior to their Friday night showdown against Manchester City, drawing nine and losing 16 along the way (per BBC Sport).
TIF Thoughts on Liam Kennedy’s comments on Newcastle’s midfield…
Given how Jonjo Shelvey, who has made more appearances for Newcastle in the Premier League than any other midfielder with 27, has only managed to score two goals and provide one assist in the process, this suggests that Newcastle should maybe look at trying to sign a midfielder that can chip in with some goals and assists on a consistent basis.
Do you think Newcastle need to prioritise signing a midfielder this summer?
Yes
No
In our view, given the mixed bag of results Newcastle have managed to pick up this season, perhaps midfield shouldn’t be the only position the club looks to strengthen during the upcoming summer window if they want to avoid a potential relegation battle next season.
