Aston Villa journalist Ashley Preece has been sharing his thoughts on Villa right-back Ahmed Elmohamady and his future at the Midlands club.
This comes after Preece made an appearance on a recent episode of the Birmingham Mail’s Claret & Blue Podcast where he spoke about a range of topics concerning Dean Smith’s side.
On the subject of Elmohamady, whose current contract at Villa Park is set to expire at the end of June, Preece had this to say about the defender and his future. (5.35)
He said: “I spoke to some of his representatives last week, Villa haven’t offered him a new deal as yet, that’ll be discussed in the summer.
“Another brilliant servant, £1 million, he’s done really well, played in a number of positions for Villa, centre-half this season don’t forget in the [Carabao] Cup.”
Villa signed Elmohamady back in the 2017 summer transfer window from Hull City for a fee of £990k. Since then, the 33-year-old, who is currently valued at £1.62 million, has made 127 appearances for Villa, prior to their midweek Premier League clash against Everton, in which he has managed to score four goals and provide 17 assists in the process (per Transfermarkt).
TIF Thoughts on Ashley Preece’s comments on Elmohamady and his future…
Given how Elmohamady has only made 12 appearances for Villa in the Premier League so far this season, starting seven of them, it seems that the Egyptian is a utility player for Smith instead of a regular starter.
Do you think Villa should offer Elmohamady a new contract?
Yes
No
With Elmohamady’s current contract set to run out in the summer, the club will need to come to a decision as to whether or not they feel he can offer them something in the squad or if it would be better for him to move on.
In our view, given his age, it may be best for Villa to move Elmohamady on and look to replace him with a younger player that can challenge for the right-back position.
