Speaking on the most recent episode of the U Irons podcast, Roshane Thomas lauded Pablo Fornals claiming the Spaniard is West Ham United’s ‘unsung hero’ this season.
The Hammers have enjoyed a fabulous campaign to date, mounting a Champions League challenge despite spending considerably less than their rivals at the top end of the Premier League table.
Have you been impressed with Fornals so far this season?
Yes
No
However, a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Everton last time out has seen the capital club fall six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with just three games left to play.
One major positive to come out of the loss was the performance of Fornals, though. The 25-year-old put in a magnificent display against the Toffees, achieving an impressive WhoScored rating of 7.03/10, and Thomas believes his recent upturn in form deserves some recognition.
He said: (32:50) “Before the match, I saw this clip on Sky Sports in terms of like Oscar nominations, what’s been goal of the season, who’s been signing of the season and like a little preview video, I didn’t get to see who they picked for the unsung hero of the season, but my one would definitely be Fornals because the way this guy’s improved, oh my goodness.
“He struggled in his first season, as we all know, played on like left-back, right-back, midfield, left-wing, right-wing, all over the place. Now he’s got a position he’s good at, even when Lanzini came off, because Fornals started on the wing, and when Lanzini came off with an injury, Fornals went in central alongside Soucek, still played well.
“This guy’s improved so much, and I’m happy for him because it goes to show that listen, every player will struggle to like acclimatise to a new league, different system, but there’s a good player there and we’re seeing that with Fornals and being rewarded for that.”
TIF Thoughts on Fornals…
Injuries to key men such as Angelo Ogbonna and Declan Rice appear to have severely hampered West Ham’s progress in the league in recent weeks, but Fornals has done his best to fill the void.
After enduring a difficult first season on English shores in 2019/20, where he scored just two Premier League goals all season, Fornals appears to have finally found his feet at the London Stadium, and David Moyes is now reaping the rewards given how the Spaniard has managed to score three goals and provide three assists in the league so far.
