On the latest edition of The Athletic Football podcast, Newcastle United correspondent Chris Waugh has been discussing the latest news at the Tyneside club.
One of the big talking points currently surrounding the Magpies is who will manage their side on Sunday in their Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur.
Do you expect Bruce to be in charge on Sunday?
Yes
No
It has been reported that the expectation is Steve Bruce will not be in the dugout at St. James’ Park, with Graeme Jones set to step in as the interim manager.
Bruce’s expected departure leaves the question of who will be the next permanent manager on Tyneside with the likes of Antonio Conte already being linked with the role.
Discussing the situation at St. James’ Park regarding the managerial role, Waugh had the following to say on what he understands to be the case as far as Bruce’s future lies.
“Part of the problem has been because this has happened so quickly and because this has been going on for so long, there is no successor lined up.
“There are various names that they like. Each of the three elements of the consortium, you have to remember as well, there’s quite a complex ownership group here. And so they all have different ideas as to what they want to do. Decisions take a bit of time.
“But in terms of my understanding of the sort of manager they like, how it’s been put to me so far is a sort of club-builder, almost; someone who’s going to help them progress to the next level.”
TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’ next manager…
We struggle to see someone like Antonio Conte taking the role at St. James’ Park given the amount of work we feel needs to be done to take Newcastle to the top, where the owners are targetting.
Conte’s last three club jobs have been at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter, so it would be a big change for the Italian to join a side who are currently battling relegation.
Lucien Favre has been linked with the Toon, and we feel this is the type of manager which could well be targetted by the new owners given he is not quite regarded in the top bracket of managers, but also has experience at a big club in Borussia Dortmund.
The former Dortmund manager may not be considered in the same category as Conte, however, his experience in managing at Champions League level could provide the Toon with the boost they need to close the gap on the ‘big six’.
