Aaron Stokes has admitted that he’s worried by the injury scare Newcastle United ace Callum Wilson sustained while at the World Cup.
Wilson fulfilled what was likely a childhood dream over the winter by turning out for England at a World Cup, albeit he only got handed 47 minutes of action, but did manage to register an assist on his World Cup debut.
However, it wasn’t all good news for the striker or indeed Newcastle as he did pick up an injury while away with the Three Lions and Stokes has admitted he’s worried about how that may impact him in a Black and White shirt.
Stokes, who was speaking on the Everything is Black and White podcast has admitted there are worries about Wilson and how fit he will be for Newcastle.
(16:55) “I mean, there’s always a worry we were all delighted that Callum Wilson was on the plane, I think we would have been equally delighted if he’d been sat on a beach for two weeks or in Miami or wherever the other players jetted off to.
“It’s worrying that he obviously missed a couple of days of training before the France game, I know he was back in training on Friday which suggests it was just a precaution as was coming out of the England camp.
Would you start Wilson vs Bournemouth?
Yes!
No!
“Eddie Howe will know all this they’ve been briefed by the England coaches as to what his fitness has been like, it’ll be managed, and you’ve got the boost that Isak is probably going to be nearly up to speed hopefully in time for Bournemouth, Saturday as you know we might potentially see him.
“Chris Wood, if that injury he picked up against Al-Hilal isn’t too concerning, it might give Wilson just another week or two to get back up to full speed.”
TIF Thoughts on Wilson…
Given that Chris Wood has started every Carabao Cup clash this season so far, there would appear to be no need for Eddie Howe to thrust Wilson into the starting lineup on Tuesday and instead, ensure he’s fully fit and rested for their Boxing Day clash away to Leicester City.
When he’s been fit and on the pitch this season, Wilson has been one of the most inform strikers in the Premier League with six goals in 10 starts, which is certainly no fluke as his record for the Magpies reads very impressively as 26 goals in 49 league starts.
Howe knows how important he is to Newcastle pushing for the top four in the second half of the season, having previously spoken publicly about how Wilson is indeed ‘hugely important‘ to the Magpies and how they play.
