Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur may look to hand out a new contract to Eric Dier in the near future.
As more and more rumours begin to swirl around what may or may not happen in the January transfer market, there will be plenty of focus on the incoming and outgoings at Spurs over the next month.
Of course, though, the club may also be looking into who they want to keep at the club for the long term by tying them down to a new contract. For instance, Dier will see his current deal expire in 2024, and his situation may soon be on the agenda at the club.
According to Romano, Tottenham are yet to get anywhere ‘advanced’ with regard to such talk, but things could pick up after the winter window closes.
He told the Last Word On Spurs podcast: “For Eric Dier, I’m told it’s a possibility, but it’s still not something in advanced stages.
“So I think we have to follow that one after the January transfer window or in the next few weeks.”
TIF Thoughts on Eric Dier and Spurs…
Dier has been a mainstay in the heart of the Tottenham defence since his debut season for the club back in 2014/15. Playing over 20 league games in all but one full season since, and he should surpass that mark this term again having made 16 appearances so far.
However, it’s not as if he’s always been a faultless player. For instance, he was slammed by fans after making a mistake which led to a goal in the 2-2 draw away at Brentford recently.
Even so, Antonio Conte clearly trusts him as a regular member of his starting XI. And still only 28 years of age, it seems quite likely that Dier will be offered a new contract in the near future.
With about 18 months left on his deal, it’s safe to expect some movement on this one shortly.
