Journalist Jordan Cronin has claimed that Newcastle United’s imminent signing of Sven Botman sends out a “positive message” and a “catalyst” to attract more top stars joining.
The Toon are on the brink of completing their third signing of the summer, after agreeing €37m a deal with LOSC Lille over the weekend to bring Dutch defender Sven Botman to St James’ Park.
The Netherland U21 star was pictured arriving on Tyneside to undertake his medical ahead of signing a new long-term deal for Eddie Howe’s men.
It has been long running saga for the Magpies, after they officially begun their interest in January, battling it out with the likes of AC Milan for the defender’s signature.
Botman was reportedly preferring a move to the San Siro, however the Italian champions pulled out of a deal as they could not come to an agreement with the player, giving the Magpies a free run.
And journalist Cronin believes the signing is a step in the right direction for the club who have beaten European giants to a top player’s signature.
He tweeted on Monday morning:
“You know the most pleasing thing about the Botman deal? He was the one #NUFC wanted and they got him. Beating AC Milan to a player is no easy task btw. It sends out a really positive message and could be the catalyst for other top players joining.”
TIF thoughts on Cronin’s comments…
This will be a statement signing from Newcastle United and PIF, and will considerably show the rest of Europe that they mean business in the market and also a signal of strength when competing with Europe’s top elite sides for some of the continent’s top stars.
The £27m-rated colossus, has long been considered as one of Europe’s most highly coveted young defenders in the past couple years, and the fact that the Magpies have won the race of for his signature does indeed send out a “positive message” not just for the Geordie fans but in the interests of the club for any future deals.
They can arguably now be considered an attractive proposition for top stars across the continent.
Taking into account how the Magpies have been pursuing Botman since January, the news that the club have agreed a deal with such a promising and highly sought after player will surely be music to the ears of Newcastle fans everywhere.
