Coming out of retirement for Scotland’s forthcoming World Cup Qualifier against England, it’s been revealed that Celtic’s Scott Brown turned down a Premier League switch in 2007, report The Sun.
Set to go up against Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions at Wembley on Friday, it was Southgate who tried to sign Brown for Middlesbrough when he was a Hibernian player back in 2007.
Speaking ahead of Friday’s cross-border derby, Southgate claimed: “I was trying to get him to Middlesbrough in 2007 when he was at Hibs. But he had his heart set on Celtic and I could see his character back then.
A Celtic player for over nine years now, Brown has made 258 Scottish Premiership appearances for the Bhoys while scoring 25 times to boot.
With Scotland currently trailing leaders England by three points in Group F right now, Brown and Scotland will be looking for revenge following the Three Lions’ 1-3 win over the Tartan Army at Celtic Park back in November 2014.
