Liverpool defender Joel Matip was ‘punished’ for his individual mistake during the Premier League game vs Brighton and Hove Albion this afternoon, according to journalist Neil Jones.
The Reds were the visitors at The Amex earlier today where Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat, thanks to second-half goals from Solly March who was at the double before Danny Welbeck netted the third.
For the opener, the centre-back came out to challenge one of the Seagulls’ players but failed to retain the ball which ultimately created the passage of play leading up to the home side finding the back of the net, and it didn’t go down well at all.
Taking to Twitter, Jones reacted to Matip’s mistake in the build-up to Liverpool conceding for the first time and was disappointed by the nature in which they went behind. He wrote:
“Error from Matip is punished right at the start of the second half as March prods home. Ridiculous from Liverpool, who must have had an earful at the break.”
TIF thoughts on Liverpool’s performance…
Liverpool have had a mixed start to the season as it is, but this was another bad day at the office and one that shows that they are currently underperforming.
The Merseyside outfit recently added Cody Gakpo to their ranks, but the need for reinforcements, especially in the midfield and defensive areas, are clear.
Klopp’s men face a huge uphill battle should they want to secure a top-four finish at the end of the campaign, and they can only change their fortunes by regaining some form moving forward.
