Paul Merson has said that he doesn’t expect Steve Bruce to be in charge at Newcastle United come the start of next season.
Merson admits that the club ‘need better’ after a spell where the threat of relegation loomed large.
Merson had backed Bruce
The former Arsenal man has previously accused Bruce’s critics on Tyneside of expecting far too much.
He’s suggested that Newcastle supporters believe they should be competing for the top six.
Speaking before the Magpies’ 1-1 draw with Liverpool, Merson predicted that they would be in for a similar campaign in 2021/22, warning about the possibility of an annual cycle.
He went on to reveal that he’s ‘learnt a lot’ in the last few weeks and can no longer support Bruce.
Soccer Saturday host Jeff Stelling replied that Bruce did have his backers in the fanbase, but they were merely ‘the quiet ones’.
‘Not everybody’ wants him out, Stelling insisted.
