How West Ham’s season fell apart

|

Time appears to be running out for West Ham as another chance goes by and another three points slip form their grasp against Blackburn Rovers yesterday. The game itself was a tight affair and finished 1-1. As a result, I’m sure Avram Grant is feeling the pressure and his side appear to be heading out of the Premier League with only six points left to play for and it looks as though it wont be enough to save them from the drop. This could result in top players such as Scott Parker heading for the exit door in the summer, with teams like Liverpool lurking the club are almost certainly preparing for life in the Championship.

With West Ham gunning for three points they started the more positive of the two sides and with Carlton Cole being a nuisance upfront. He created a half chance early on which was blocked and picked up by the Blackburn goalkeeper but it was the away side who took the lead after 13 minutes when Brett Emerton got behind Wayne Bridge to lay it across for Roberts to knock the ball home and make it 1-0. After the goal The Hammers couldn’t get going and the game fizzled out until half time only creating a few half chances.

Again it was West Ham who came out the stronger side after the interval with Hitzlsperger forcing a save from Robinson who did excellent to parry the ball to safety. Blackburn were lacking in imagination and didn’t really offer much in the way of chances in the second half. West Ham were pushing for the equaliser and the goal finally came for the home side as Hitzlsperger rifled a low shot past the former England keeper. This game wasn’t what would be described as a classic by any means and this was summed up with minutes left on the clock, Robbie Keane missed a guilt edge chance to put the Hammers in front ,with the goal gaping his shot was weak and the chance went a begging and with it West Ham’s survival chances as the game ends 1-1 both teams share the spoils.

This has been a long season for Grant’s men who find themselves rock bottom with two games remaining on 33 points. This will see the London side travel to Wigan away and then host Sunderland at home on the last day where a slight possibility of survival could still be on the cards. There is still a glimmer of hope that six points could see them safe. With Wigan, Wolves, Birmingham and Blackpool all in the mix this funny old game may still throw a few curve balls into the mix before the final whistle goes on the last day.

The only silver lining to West Hams relegation is that Avram Grant will be ousted. He is the worse manager in West Hams history (and that includes Glenn Roeder!)
Good bye Avram, you were tactically inept, showed no heart, the players were clearly unmotivated and you got what you deserved, the sack!
