Liverpool are ‘seriously interested’ in a move for Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount in the summer, as per football.london.

A dip in form for Mount

Mount has been far from his best this season and has registered just three goals and two assists for Chelsea in 23 Premier League games with the Blues in 10th place and 11 points outside of the Champions League qualification spots.

Last campaign, the £80k-per-week star was at the top of Chelsea’s goal contribution charts, registering more goals (11) and more assists (10) than any other player in Thomas Tuchel’s side, averaging a rating of 7.19, via WhoScored.

Putting up an average score of just 6.72 this term, Mount must increase his output if he wants to avoid recording his worst-ever Premier League return, with his lowest production rate standing at 11 (six goals and five assists in the 2020/21 season).

What’s the latest?

According to football.london, talks between Chelsea and the 24-year-old over a new contract continue to stall with the midfielder having just over 12 months left on his current deal.

Mount wants to remain at Chelsea with the club also wanting to keep the €65m (£57m)-rated gem, but the two parties are no closer to an agreement and are far apart in terms of what they want regarding an extension.

As per the report, the Reds lead the race for the former Derby County loanee and are ready to make the move in the summer if the situation is unresolved but will face competition from Manchester City and Manchester United who are monitoring the situation.

Klopp must bring Mount to Anfield

With Mount’s contract expiring in 2024, Liverpool must do everything they can to sign him.

According to football.london, the Reds are confident that they can entice the England international with a move to Merseyside and will be trying to do it for a reduced fee, due to his deal having less than a year to run by the time of the next transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp is looking to overhaul the midfield in the summer and will be looking for new recruits with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keïta expected to leave when their contracts expire and Arthur Melo likely to departure at the end of his loan deal.

Lacking goals in the middle of the pitch, with all of their midfielders failing to score over two goals in the league this campaign, Mount will bring an extra attacking threat to a team that has become reliant on goals from forwards.

Once described as a “rare” talent by The Sports Journal editor Omar Al Raisi, Mount ranked among Europe’s elites during the 2021/22 campaign, sitting in the top 7% for progressive passes, top 8% for assists and top 13% for shot creating actions (via FBref) so would be a vital component in Klopp’s title challenging side if he could rediscover his form.
