Newcastle United’s January business last season was key to their upturn in form, seeing them defy the odds to stay in the Premier League, something they managed to do relatively comfortably in the end. Eddie Howe’s attentions will have been on the summer transfer window for a while, with some things he needs to sort out.
Matt Targett was signed on loan in January by Howe, with the possibility of making the move permanent. He was at the club for 17 Premier League fixtures, making 16 appearances. He played 90 minutes in all 16 games, so he was clearly a key man for Howe.
However, their is uncertainty over his future, despite him putting on record his desire to stay in the North East after his loan spell.
Dean Jones, a transfer insider, has been assessing the current situation and telling GiveMeSport: “He has other options in the background – and I understand Brighton are one of them. But Newcastle have the option to get him now and typically Eddie Howe is loyal to players that do well for him. From what I am hearing, one of the figures involved in signings is not convinced about this and that’s why there is some uncertainty.”

TIF thoughts on Dean Jones’ comments…
As mentioned, Howe is clearly a fan of him, with the defender missing just the 90 minutes of football since joining the Magpies, proving to be crucial to Howe. The fact there are doubts from someone is surely going to be a worry for Howe, who is clearly impressed.
Should those doubts come to fruition and Targett isn’t signed, you’d imagine those with the doubts will have other players lined up they feel can offer more to the club.
