Jeff Stelling shared that it was a bad day all round for Leeds United after they lost to Ipswich 3-2 on Sunday.
The Sky Sports presenter pointed out that the result didn’t matter for the Whites however, as they did still end up finishing third in the Championship ahead of West Bromwich Albion after they lost to Derby County.
Stelling also shared his excitement over the Championship play-offs as he raved about Leeds’ clash with Derby and Aston Villa’s match with West Brom being fantastic encounters to look forward to.
“This is how they line-up with the date (picture of the play-off fixtures) first-leg Aston Villa v West Brom just what an appetising game that is Saturday midday on Sky Sports Football,” said Stelling (Sky Sports News, Sunday May 5th, 14:35).
“And actually Derby against Leeds is just as appealing what fantastic Championship play-off games they are, Saturday at five o’clock for the first-leg of that at Pride Park.
“Erm of course bad day all round far as Leeds were concern (3-2 loss to Ipswich) today but it didn’t matter in the end as they still finish third but losing at Ipswich.”
OPINION
While Stelling may have been hyping up Aston Villa against West Brom and Leeds’ date with destiny against Derby due to both games being on Sky Sports, it’s fair to say on paper both match-ups look appealing. The Villans’ clash with West Brom is sure to be a feisty affair given the rivalry between the two clubs, while Leeds and Derby is set to be dramatic given the spy scandal involving both teams earlier in the season. The Whites face a true test of character when they face Derby as their recent form has ruined their momentum going to the play-offs. Leeds at one point looked on course to be going up to the Premier League automatically but after terrible results against Wigan and Brentford they’ve had to make do with the play-offs. It’ll be interesting to see how Leeds cope against Frank Lampard’s side as a result as they might not be the same confident side that blew Derby away on both occasions this season.
