Leeds United and Huddersfield Town remain apart in their valuations of midfielder Lewis O’Brien, according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s interest in signing the 22-year-old has been well-documented, with Leeds already seeing two bids rejected for O’Brien earlier in the transfer window.
O’Brien has been with Huddersfield Town’s senior side since 2018, and has gone on to make 85 senior appearances for the club, which includes four so far in all competitions this term.
Speaking on The Phil Hay Show, Hay admitted that neither club are going to move in their valuations of O’Brien, which is likely to mean that an agreement isn’t set to be reached before the summer transfer window reaches a conclusion.
“Leeds then turned to Lewis O’Brien of Championship neighbours Huddersfield Town but soon hit an impasse over the 22-year-old’s fee — they value him at £4 million, Huddersfield want no less than £8 million.
“There is no sign of either club shifting from those positions and the attitude at Elland Road is that they do not need O’Brien enough to make the extra money worth paying.”
Leeds are set to return to action on Sunday afternoon, when they take on Burnley, in what could potentially be a tricky test for the Whites at Turf Moor.
Whilst O’Brien could be involved on Saturday for Huddersfield Town, as they prepare to take on Reading, in what is likely to be a well-contested battle between both teams.
TIF Thoughts on Phil Hay’s update on Leeds’ pursuit of O’Brien, as Deadline Day edges closer…
It’s slightly surprising that they’re seemingly set to end their interest in signing O’Brien this summer, as he’s been the player that they’ve been keen to reach an agreement with in recent months, rather than weeks.
But, with Huddersfield Town refusing to accept any offers that don’t match their valuation of the midfielder, the move is seemingly off the table at this stage.
It’ll be interesting to see whether O’Brien looks to force a move away from the John Smith’s Stadium now that Leeds look set to cool their interest in landing his signature, with Huddersfield seemingly pricing him out of a move anywhere this summer.
With deadline day set to take place next week, it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for O’Brien.
