Manchester United and England centre-back Harry Maguire’s ability is overhyped, according to former League Cup winner Nigel Jemson.
Maguire joined United from Leicester City for £80million – a world record fee for a defender – two years ago.
He has gone on to become the Red Devils’ captain and play a key role for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, making 109 appearances.
Is Man United's Harry Maguire overhyped?
Yes
No
Maguire is also a regular fixture in Gareth Southgate’s England squad and fought back from an ankle injury to win five caps as the Three Lions heartbreakingly missed out on the Euro 2020 crown after losing to Italy in the final’s penalty shoot-out.
United chief Solskjaer will be hoping Maguire is set to form a profitable partnership with Raphael Varane after the 2018 World Cup winner completed his move from Spanish giants Real Madrid earlier this month.
Jemson believes Solskjaer had no option but to improve his central defensive options and thinks pundits rate Maguire too highly.
He exclusively told TIF: “They had to sign a centre-half because they couldn’t go another season with what they had. They weren’t good enough.
“There was a lot of pressure on Harry Maguire and I still don’t think he’s as good as what everyone makes him out to be.
“He’s not a world-beater. Absolutely, he is a good player. I think Manchester United paid over the top when they bought him and the people he has got around him don’t help him either.”
