Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey believes the Magpies needed to sign a proven striker before the transfer window closed.
Steve Bruce had a deadline day and overall window to forget, with a loan deal for Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury falling through.
Newcastle were able to bring in Santiago Munoz on loan, someone who will give Bruce another option up front.
Do Newcastle need another striker?
Yes
No
However, the Mexican is just 19 years of age and has no experience in a top European league.
Ultimately, for Howey, his old side needed to bring in an experienced No.9 to support Callum Wilson.
When asked by TIF if that striker position needed to be seriously addressed during the recent transfer window, the ex-Newcastle star said:
“I think that’s the main issue. I mean, I like Callum Wilson. When he was at Bournemouth, I liked him playing up front with [Josh] King, but he has had a couple of injuries.
“If you don’t have him playing and fit, then where are the goals going to come from? They aren’t coming from Joelinton, they aren’t coming from [Allan] Saint-Maximin really or [Miguel] Almiron.”
Perhaps it is something Newcastle may address in January. Until then, Bruce will need Wilson to stay fit and the likes of Saint-Maximin and Almiron to start finding the back of the net on a more consistent basis.
