Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield fears Steven Gerrard will use Aston Villa as a stepping stone.
The Liverpool legend was recently named as the new Villa boss following the sacking of Dean Smith and has spoken about the club suiting him and doing exciting things there.
However, Gerrard has made it clear in the past that his long-term ambition is to understandably manage the club he captained and built a legacy at during his time as a player.
Would Gerrard turn down Liverpool?
Yes
Not a chance
Considering that, Hatfield believes Villa owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens could find themselves having an issue with the former Rangers manager later down the line.
“I suppose the issue for Villa is will he see Villa as a stepping stone for the Liverpool job when that eventually arises because Jurgen Klopp’s not going to be there forever,” the football reporter said to TIF.
If Gerrard can prove his pedigree in the Premier League having won the Scottish Premiership title with Rangers, the above is something that will surely be at the back of Sawiris, Edens and Christian Purslow’s minds.
Overall, though, given his success in Scotland and what he has accomplished in England as a player, Gerrard’s appointment is still quite an exciting one.
