England’s Football Association has issued a three-match ban and £7,500 (€9,000) fine to Ireland and West Bromwich Albion defender Dara O’Shea over steward incident during West Brom’s clash against Peterborough United in the Championship back in August.
The punishment relates to an incident that occurred as West Brom players celebrated Semi Ajayi’s stoppage-time goal that sealed a 1-0 victory away to Peterborough United in August. O’Shea, who was later shown a yellow card, was involved in an altercation with a steward who was attempting to remove a West Brom supporter from the field of play.
The 22-year-old firmly denied that his behaviour amounted to improper or violent conduct, but having considered the evidence during a hearing, an independent regulatory commission deemed that a breach of FA Rule E3 was proven.
Will West Brom be promoted back to the Premier League this season?YesNo |
That rule states that players “shall at all times act in the best interests of the game and shall not act in any manner which is improper or brings the game into disrepute or use any one, or a combination of, violent conduct, serious foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour”.
What did these football fans make of O’Shea’s punishment issued?
“Pathetic”
“Battered a steward and gets a 7.5k fine. Sound”
“Well the FA didn’t think that through at all”
“This has to be the most pointless 3 game ban ever”
“3 match ban during a long term injury, solid”
“What a legend. But what is the point of the ban if he’s out injured anyway?”
“So it’s a token charge then?”
“Futile”
However the suspension issued to the Irishman will effectively be irrelevant for O’Shea, as he is already due to be sidelined until the new year after the fractured his ankle during Ireland’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal in September.
He has since had surgery on the injury shortly after the game and has been on the mend since as he seeks to be available for Valerien Ismael’s side in the near future as they seek to secure a first time return after being relegated last season.
