Former Southampton player Carlton Palmer believes Ralph Hasenhuttl to Aston Villa was a non-starter.
According to The Telegraph, the Southampton manager was one name Aston Villa considered after the club parted ways with Dean Smith, but they opted to appoint Steven Gerrard for the role in the end.
Do you think that Steven Gerrard is a good appointment for Aston Villa?
Yes
No
Palmer couldn’t see Hasenhuttl to Aston Villa happening, telling This is Futbol: “I didn’t see that one, really. I didn’t see that one. He’s done a decent job at Southampton and yeah you know he’s done well at Southampton, but has he done well enough to warrant a club like Aston Villa?”
During his spell with the Saints, Hasenhuttl has guided the club to 16th, 11th and 15th in the Premier League table. So far this campaign, Southampton have accumulated 14 points, with ten of those coming in the club’s last four fixtures, as they have won three and drawn one in that spell and currently sit 13th.
Following promotion back to the top-flight in the 2018/2019 campaign, Smith led Aston Villa to a 17th and 11th place finishes but departed Villa Park after five successive defeats left the club down in 16th with ten points, just two points above the relegation zone.
With Gerrard at the helm, the club will be hoping that they can turn their form around and push back up the Premier League table and when appointed, the former Rangers manager told the club’s official website: “In my conversations with Nassef, Wes and the rest of the board, it was apparent how ambitious their plans are for the club and I am looking forward to helping them achieve their aims.”
