A standout performer on loan at Leeds United so far this season, former White Noel Whelan has urged Garry Monk’s side to secure the permanent transfer of Pontus Jansson from Torino, report the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Claiming the £3 million asking price is “not a lot of money” nowadays, Whelan believes securing the Swedish international’s future would prove a massive statement in Leeds United’s playoff bid.

Representing the Whites between 1993 and 1995, Whelan claimed: “The fans love him and the players have benefited from him being in the side so I think the club needs to put their hand in their pocket pretty deep and get this one signed up.

“£3m these days is not a lot of money and you are getting a lot of player for that.”

Scoring in Leeds United’s most recent 2-3 victory over Norwich City prior to the international break, Jansson has forged an impressive centre back partnership with fellow summer arrival Kyle Bartley.

Making 11 Championship starts for Garry Monk’s Whites so far this season, Jansson has immediately become a fan favourite at Elland Road and the 25-year-old has previously claimed he wants to make a permanent switch to West Yorkshire.
