Southampton journalist Steve Grant has been sharing his thoughts on Saints midfielder Oriol Romeu and the ankle injury he picked up during their recent 3-0 defeat against Leeds United.

This comes after Grant recently made an appearance on the Total Saints podcast where he spoke about a number of topics concerning the club.

Nice easy one to start off with, who currently sits top of the table?

On the subject of Romeu, who will now be out of action for the rest of the season after suffering a fracture in his ankle against Marcelo Bielsa’s side, Grant had this to say on the situation. (18.33)

He said: “It’s a shame but I think FA Cup run aside, I think it’s probably not an awful time for us to have a relatively serious injury because he’s going to get basically the three months will take us through to the end of the season, he’ll then have a full summer to get himself up to preseason fitness with a view to then hitting the ground running at the start next season.

“So, if there is ever a good time to get a bad injury, which I mean, realistically there isn’t, but in that sort of tiny little window of slight, not quite as negative as you might be, then that’s the silver lining to take from it, I suppose.

“But, with very few other options in that position, obviously, it does make things pretty tough, at least for the next two weeks or so until we possibly get [Ibrahima] Diallo back.”

Southampton signed Romeu back in August 2015 from fellow Premier League side Chelsea for a fee of £6.3 million. Since then, the 29-year-old, who is currently valued at £7.2 million, has made 211 appearances for the club across all competitions in which he has managed to score six goals and provide three assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Steve Grant’s comments on Romeu and his injury…

Despite Grant trying to point out the silver lining regarding Romeu’s injury, the fact that he has been one of Southampton’s best performers this season with an overall season rating of 6.97/10, this shows that he probably be a big miss for the Saints throughout the remainder of the season.

Moving forward, if Romeu can use this time to recover from his injury so he is fit and raring to go for when next season kicks off, this will be the best course of action for the Spaniard.
