West Bromwich Albion journalist Joe Masi thinks that the club should be looking to appoint Swansea City’s Steve Cooper this summer.
Current Baggies boss Sam Allardyce does have a contract with the club until the end of 2021/22, but that contract does include a break claus. And as a result, there is some debate going on about whether or not he will stick around to see the season out and try to get them promoted.
And if West Brom and Allardyce do decide to part, Masi, speaking on the latest edition of Baggies Broadcast (53:53), felt that the Swans boss would be a good man for them to target if they failed to make it through the Championship play-offs:
“The one I would like, I’ve said before, is Steve Cooper at Swansea. I think he plays good football, I think he’s got something about him and I think he’s destined for a good career in the game. So if Swansea don’t go up, I’d be knocking on his door and saying, ‘we’ve got a bigger budget than Swansea, we’ve got some good players here. Do you fancy it?”

Whilst it is true that Cooper has done a good job with Swansea winning 46 out of his 102 games in charge at the Liberty Stadium, and has got them playing some entertaining football, if the club are serious about getting promoted straight away, then surely they would want someone with experience in getting promotion at the very least.
And whilst he’s only done it once, someone like Chris Wilder should be ahead of Cooper at this moment in time, in our view. That’s not to say that Cooper can’t do it at some point in the future, but at least Wilder would be a much safer bet at this moment in time.
