Arsenal insider Charles Watts thinks that David Luiz’s career at the Emirates could be over following Mikel Arteta’s injury update.
The Gunners’ season is slowly coming to an end as they find themselves barely holding on to a very unlikely chance of qualifying for Europe through the league following their disappointing exit in the Europa League to Villarreal.
They face Chelsea tonight in one of their ‘do or die’ games before the end of the season, but they will have to do so without the services of defender Luiz. Arsenal boss Arteta confirmed in his pre-match press conference Luiz has ‘not yet recovered’ from an injury he picked up against Newcastle United and that the club will monitor him over the next few weeks.
And speaking on his show (11:37), Watts felt that given the timescale of his injury, how long there is left in Arsenal’s season, and his contract situation, that the defender’s time at the club is probably finished:
“The fact that he says there Luiz ‘has not yet recovered and we’ll see how he does in the next few weeks,’ considering Arsenal have only got about 10 days left of their season, it’s highly doubtful we’re going to see David Luiz again.
“Whether we’ll see him again at all remains to be seen because of course, he’s out of contract now in the summer and Arsenal have to make a decision with him about what they are going to do. Personally, I’ve said it before, I think the time is right to move on for David Luiz.”
Did Arsenal's signing of David Luiz make any sense?
Yes, it did make sense
No, he's clueless
TIF Thoughts on Charles Watts’ comments about David Luiz’s future at Arsenal
Watts points out earlier in his video (5:24), that the club won’t need to be as big next season given their lack of European football, and Arsenal already have a decent number of central defenders on their books for 2021/22.
And with the club reportedly set to go through a major overhaul this summer with an emphasis on selling rather than bringing in, moving Luiz on at the end of his deal rather than have him clogging up the system at the Emirates does make an awful lot of sense.
