Pundit David Meyler has recently discussed the idea of Luis Suarez returning to Liverpool in the near future.

Meyler appeared on the latest episode of the OTB Football Podcast and the panel talked about numerous issues involving Liverpool and the Premier League. Meyler was asked about Suarez potentially returning to Anfield in the near future.

Meyler believes that Suarez would only be a short-term fix for the Reds when they should actually be looking to bring a younger player to consider the long-term picture at the club.

Do you think Suarez will ever return to Liverpool?

No

Suarez did join Atletico Madrid from Barcelona in the summer of 2020 for a fee of £6.30 million. But the Uruguayan’s current contract at Atleti runs out in the summer of 2022, so he has another year left on his deal (as per Transfermarkt).

Meyler talked about the idea of Liverpool signing Suarez in the future, saying that he would serve the club for one or two seasons only.

The pundit said (20:34): “I think like at that age, Liverpool will be looking for a younger player. You’re looking at a long-term project where you can get that player for the best part of eight to ten seasons and then if it doesn’t work out, you can resell him.

“I just feel with Luis, he’ll be like a quick fix. You’ll only probably get the best out of him for probably a season or two seasons. There’s no doubting he knows Liverpool, he knows Premier League, he can score goals, but I don’t think he’s Liverpool’s long-term solution.”

TIF Thoughts on Suarez’s potential return…

Liverpool’s usual front three of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino has been a regular this season, but only Salah has scored beyond the ten-goal mark this season. On top of that, they’re approaching the age of 30 too (as per WhoScored).

So it suggests that they have an ageing frontline anyway and Suarez isn’t getting any younger with every passing day either. Links with Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic also suggest that Liverpool are looking for a younger striker. So perhaps, the idea of Suarez returning to Liverpool doesn’t make sense.
