Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth has been sharing his thoughts on West Ham United manager David Moyes, his current position at the club and the upcoming summer transfer window.
This comes after Sheth made an appearance on a recent episode of The Sky Sports Football Podcast where he spoke about a number of topics concerning numerous clubs in the Premier League.
On the subject of Moyes and his current stance at the east London club, Sheth had this to say on the matter (32:19):
He said: “I think what has happened for this season is with David Moyes, he’s taken control of a lot of the aspects of that football club, particularly the recruitment. And I think what he will need this summer is to continue that control, but also get the full backing of the owners at West Ham United.
“Because if you think about what’s happened and why they’ve fallen just short of what would have been a miracle season for them, when they’ve lost some of their big players, they simply haven’t been able to cope as well as some of their most illustrious counterparts.
“I know that they’ve got results without Declan Rice. I know they’ve got results without Michail Antonio, but to sustain results on a consistent basis without two of their best players, they were always going to trip up somewhere and I think that’s why they might have fallen short.
“So I think David Moyes will have every right to go to the board and say, ‘Look, you need to get me a little bit more depth because if this is not going to be a one-off season, I need to recruit in the summer.'”
So far this season, the Hammers have won 17 out of the 35 league games they’ve played, drawing seven and losing 11 in the process (per BBC Sport).

Given how well West Ham have done in the Premier League this season under Moyes, it’s understandable why Sheth thinks the Hammers boss should ask for the backing from the owners in terms of summer transfers to try and push the team even further than they have gone in this campaign.

In our view, with West Ham, having managed to concede 10 goals in their five previous league games since Declan Rice has been out injured, perhaps they should look at signing another defensive-midfielder who can step in when Rice is unavailable and keep the defence tight in his absence.
Also, with the club having sold Sebastien Haller in the previous January transfer window and with Michail Antonio having his fair share of injury issues, perhaps a striker should be on their transfer wish-list as well.
