According to reports from Goal, Tottenham Hotspur intend to double Harry Kane’s salary to £70k per week as a reward for his recent form.
The 22-year-old finished up as the Premier League’s top scoring Englishman last season with 21 goals in 34 appearances and following a slow start to the current campaign finds himself in the upper echelons of the division’s goal charts once again, with a return of eight in 14.
Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy has made a habit of rewarding the club’s top performers with improved contracts, but there is another obvious motivation to issuing the England international a pay rise and extending his White Hart Lane stay until 2021.
Kane’s meteoric rise over the last twelve months has not gone unnoticed and according to the tabloids, two of Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League rivals are keen to take the 6 foot 2 striker off their hands – Manchester United and Chelsea.
The Red Devils courted Kane during the summer to no avail and reports in October suggested they’d be prepared to pay £60million to bring the Three Lions prodigy to Old Trafford following underwhelming starts to the season from strike-force Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial, who have found just five Premier League goals between them.
Likewise, Chelsea were linked last week amid concerns over Diego Costa’s performances, which have surely only amplified following the Spain international’s ‘bib-gate‘ falling out with Jose Mourinho, coincidentally at White Hart Lane, on Sunday.
Even though Tottenham have no intention of selling an academy product who has become the talismanic poster boy of Mauricio Pochettino’s progressing reign anyway, the new contract would certainly go some way to stopping any approaches from Chelsea or Manchester United in the near future.
