According to reports from The Express, Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan is back on Manchester United’s radar ahead of a potential January swoop.
The Argentina international is the stand-out star of the Aguias starting Xi and one of the biggest talents outside of Europe’s five leading top flights. He’s made over 225 appearances since joining the Estadio da Luz ranks from River Plate in summer 2010, helping Benfica claim two Primeira Liga titles, one Taca de Portugal and four Taca da Ligas.
The 27-year-old has been linked with a Premier League move for much of his Benfica career. Liverpool and Manchester United were both reportedly courting him during the summer and Louis van Gaal even had a £22million bid accepted – but pulled the plug on a deal at the last minute.
But according to The Express, who cite Portuguese publication Record, Gaitan is on the Red Devils’ radar once again ahead of the January transfer window.
The Old Trafford boss has made no secret of his desire to sign another wide man in the new year and it appears the South American has re-emerged as a feasible option, with United scouts in attendance as Benfica claimed a 2-0 win over Braga on Monday evening.
Gaitan’s contract is believed to include a £25million buy-out fee.
