Newcastle journalist Scott Wilson has shared his praise for Allan Saint-Maximin and his display in the Tyneside club’s recent 2-0 defeat against Liverpool in the Premier League.
Having not lost a league game since their 2-1 defeat at Anfield back in August, Newcastle were beaten by Jurgen Klopp’s side again on Saturday evening thanks to goals from Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo.
Despite the loss, one Newcastle player, in particular, found himself on the end of some praise by the end of the game.
In a Twitter post, Wilson had this to say about Saint-Maximin’s efforts.
He said: “REACTION: A really bad night at the office for #NUFC – but Eddie Howe highlighted Allan Saint-Maximin’s display as a real positive. ASM certainly looked back to something close to his best as he repeatedly asked questions of the Liverpool defence…”
The Frenchman completed the full 90 minutes on Saturday, the first time he’s done that in the league since Newcastle’s 1-1 draw against Wolves, and showed how much of a dangerous attacking figure he is.
For example, having successfully completed seven of the nine dribbles he attempted, which is more than any other player on the pitch managed to achieve, the winger also had three attempts at goal, hit the woodwork on one occasion and made two key passes.
Was Allan Saint-Maximin Newcastle's best player against Liverpool?
Yes
No
His efforts ultimately earned the attacker a match rating of 7.9/10 from SofaScore, making him the highest-rated Newcastle player on the day.
The Daily Mail also picked up on the 25-year-old impressive display by saying this about him in their player ratings article.
They said: “Newcastle’s best player on the pitch, Saint-Maximin was a constant thorn in Liverpool’s side throughout the game and made numerous piercing runs at the defence to get his side up the pitch.”
Taking all of this into account, it’s clear that the winger was a shining light for the home side on what was a rather disappointing evening and very much earned the praise given to him by Wilson.
