David Ornstein has been speaking on BBC’s Transfer Gossip Daily podcast about how keen Steven Gerrard is to bring Lucas Digne to Aston Villa.
The Villans are certainly not wasting time this transfer window, having already secured the loan signing of Barcelona man Philippe Coutinho, and are now reportedly in pole position to sign Digne.
Would Digne be a good signing for Villa?
Yes!
No!
It would be a statement of intent from Aston Villa to sign someone such as Digne given he’s a French international and also had interest from Champions League winners Chelsea and the mega-rich Newcastle United.
Ornstein had this to say on Gerrard’s eagerness to get this deal done:
“Their project is really exciting, they’ve got wealthy owners who want to take Villa right to the top and I think Gerrard’s keen on this, from what I hear, so it wouldn’t surprise me if that one gets done.
“I think he’s a really good player, it’s just a bit of a shame how it’s soured at Everton and with [Rafael] Benitez, but he’s a France international, he’s a fantastic player.”
TIF Thoughts on Digne to Villa…
Digne has certainly had a shock to his system this season under Rafael Benitez, as since he arrived at Goodison Park, the full-back had started at least 30 games in the league every season, but has failed to feature for the Toffees in their previous seven games across all competitions.
It’s been reported by TalkSport that the Frenchman has now agreed personal terms with Aston Villa, so bringing in someone such as Digne to provide competition to Matt Targett, who has featured quite often over the last few seasons, would provide super strength of depth and highlights that Aston Villa are certainly looking to push up the table.
