Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has called for Thomas Muller to be dropped from the Germany team after a poor display against Japan.
The former Ballon D’or winner claimed that Muller was not fully fit in Germany’s shock defeat, and it was reminiscent of when he had played in Euro 2000.
Speaking to BILD, Matthaus gave his ideal lineup for Sunday’s vital clash against Spain, and surprisingly left out the vastly experienced Muller.
“Thomas Müller reminded me of my last tournament, Euro 2000. Back then I came back from a 2-week injury and never found my game,” he stated.
“Now I have the impression that Thomas is not 100% fit. He was not in the game.”
The former midfielder had claimed that Leon Goretzka should come in for Muller, with Ilkay Gundogan moving into a more advanced role, for a must-win game against a Spain side who won their opening match 7-0.
TIF thoughts on Muller…
We disagree that Muller should be dropped, but other changes may be needed.
Even if he is not fully fit, the attacker is one of Germany’s best-ever players, with ten World Cup goals in 17 matches, and it is this experience and know-how that will be needed against Spain.
The 33-year-old made three key passes against Japan as per SofaScore, but was arguably let down by other teammates, and the likes of Kai Havertz and Nico Schlotterbeck were more disappointing than the Bayern Munich star.
Facing Spain is an unenviable task for anyone, and the 2014 Champions will have to be at their best to keep their knockout hopes alive.
