Journalist David Lynch has stated that he would be ‘surprised’ if Liverpool star Roberto Firmino signed a new deal with the club.

Speaking on the Blood Red YouTube channel, Lynch expects any new deal offered by the Reds to the forward to be a reduced one, implying that he may decide his future lies elsewhere.

Firmino signed for Liverpool back in 2015, costing £29m from Hoffenheim.

The 31-year-old’s deal at Anfield runs out next summer, so it’s likely that we’ll know the outcome of his future in the coming months.

Lynch stated: “Maybe it is a possibility that he will sign a new contract, but when you get this close, it feels less and less likely. I would be slightly surprised if it does go down that route, unless he really, really does want to stay at Liverpool, because I would imagine it would be on reduced terms.”

TIF’s view on Lynch’s comments…

From what Lynch is saying, it appears that the decision on Firmino’s future could well be in the hands of the player rather than the club.

The Brazilian has 132 goal contributions from 264 Premier League matches with the Reds, so you’d have to say that’s £29m well spent on the forward.

In the 2022/23 campaign to date, Firmino has 11 goal contributions from 13 league matches, showing that he’s been a real attacking threat for Liverpool this season.

What it will come down to is whether or not he feels he wants to have a change of scenery and play his football elsewhere. Given that the forward is 31, another move could be potentially one of the last ones he makes in his career.

Whatever the outcome is, most Liverpool fans will surely hold Firmino in high regard considering he’s been with the club for over seven years. In that time, he’s shared some great memories with the fans, winning the Premier League and Champions League along the way.
