Journalist Jacque Talbot has revealed that Everton held talks over signing England full-back Luke Shaw last summer, with the Toffees still keen on bringing him to Goodison Park.
Talbot, was speaking on his YouTube channelĀ about the defender’s future, with Shaw’s contract running out in 2023.
He also claimed Leicester City were interested in the 27-year-old’s services in the summer.
Shaw has been called up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate for the World Cup in Qatar. However, the lack of a new deal for the 27-year-old suggests his time at Old Trafford may be hanging in the balance.
The journalist said: “His contract is up in 2023 and [I’m] not sure [if] they’re going to renew it.
“Everton do want him, still. I’m not sure about Leicester, but I know they’re after a left-back.”
TIF Thoughts on Talbot’s comments…
We believe Man United are right to let Luke Shaw go. The club have been in a long rebuilding process, and if they want to start competing with the likes of Manchester City, they need to improve their squad.
Shaw has had his moments playing for the Red Devils. In the 2020/21 season, the England international averaged a rating of 7.18 on Sofascore. He accumulated five assists and kept 10 clean sheets that season.
But that season aside, it’s been an arguably underwhelming stint in Manchester for the ex-Southampton man.
Therefore, a move to another Premier League side could help kickstart his career, and with Everton bringing in the likes of Donny van de Beek and Dele Alli recently, we can see why Frank Lampard may want to look at this profile of player again.
Additionally, a fresh chapter in Shaw’s career could be exactly what he needs. There’s no doubt he can be a quality player on his day, as there’s a reason Southgate wants him in his England squad.
