Throughout the last couple of transfer windows it has seemed that Borussia Dortmund’s top striker, Robert Lewandowski was destined to move to Manchester United.
It’s a move that the Press has been drumming up for a number of months now and it has always seemed like it was going to happen at some stage.
But you know what they say about ‘best laid plans’.
And now, according to The Sun, Arsenal are ready to rival Manchester United for Lewandowski’s signature. It’s a bold move from Arsene Wenger, but it may well be necessary.
When United and Arsenal last tussled over a striker, the Gunners ended up losing out. Last summer, Arsenal sold their captain, Robin Van Persie, to United and they’ve paid the price. Yes, he was approaching the end of his contract, but his sale has accelerated Arsenal’s plummet down the Premier League table and serious strengthened Manchester United who are title-favourites this season.
Filling your coiffers is one thing, but most Arsenal fans just want to see their side compete for silverware. Sir Alex realised just how important a goal-scoring centre-forward would be this year and I don’t see why next season will be any different.
If Arsenal can track down and entice a classy striker to play alongside the likes of Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott, there’s no reason why they can’t start mounting a serious title challenge next year.
And I’d argue that Robert Lewandowski is a player who could provide Arsenal with the impetus to do exactly that – if they can only fight off the advances of Manchester United.
For a start, his goal-scoring record is immaculate. In three seasons at Dortmund, Lewandowski has found the back of the net 51 times in 91 appearances. He’s also grabbed 17 for Poland in 53 games, which shouldn’t be sneered at. His fine goal-scoring form has continued this season and it would surprise nobody if he were to make a big money move.
He’s a player who would likely fit in well in the Premier League. He’s physically strong, but he’s also crafty and takes up smart positions on the pitch. His mobility and intelligence gets him into goal-scoring situations and his cool-head allows him to convert chances. For Arsenal, he’d represent an upgrade on Olivier Giroud.
I’d also argue that Arsenal have a more pressing need for a striker than Manchester United. For that reason and many others, I’d like to see Arsene Wenger sign Lewandowski this summer.
What’s your take? Should Arsenal rival Manchester United for Robert Lewandowski’s signature?
